Before we delve into the specifics of NordVPN and IPVanish products and services we need to discuss what we are comparing. If you’re looking to decide what VPN is best for you, then this review will provide you with all of the facts that you need to make the best choice.

10 Areas of Comparison

To ensure accurate information in all 10 areas of service, each VPN company will be compared due to its performance in each of the following areas:

  1. Connection Speed
  2. Pricing Comparison
  3. Privacy Comparison
  4. International Server Coverage
  5. Multi-platform support
  6. Netflix Unblocking
  7. Customer Support
  8. Encryption Protocols
  9. Number of Simultaneous Connections
  10.  P2P/ BitTorrent Support

These are the areas of focus for VPNs and as such the best VPN will ideally excel in all 10. In this article, we’ll dive deep on the pros and cons (in an unbias fashion) of both NordVPN and IPVanish to discover which one is the best in each area and then disclose the overall winner.

Let’s get started with the detailed NordVPN vs IPVanish comparison.

Connection Speed Comparison

I’m sure you’ll agree – there’s nothing worse than slow internet speed. I’d always expect my access to be instantaneous, but sometimes VPNs can slow things down, which can be frustrating. You’ll want the highest level of security with the fastest load times when choosing your ideal VPN.

You’ll need to make sure that your chosen VPN provider has servers located near to you to avoid lag. NordVPN has no bandwidth limits and has 690+ servers in the UK alone. Making them a great choice. In fact, NordVPN is the first VPN to receive a Speedtest Recommended badge from Ookla.

On the other hand, IPVanish has just 103 servers in the UK, but they are spread across three locations. When we compared the speeds of each provider NordVPN was the winner.

Pricing Comparison

For many, pricing is the key factor to consider when budgeting for a VPN, therefore this section is important. To compare plans fairly, we need to take the duration into consideration. I’ve chosen to compare the 1-year plans.

  • IPVanish – 1 Year – $6.49 (No free trial/ 7-day money-back guarantee)
  • NordVPN – 1 Year – $6.99 per month (No free trial/ 30-day money-back guarantee)

As you can see there is not much in it, you save a meager 50 cents per month ($6 per year) if you choose IPVanish. The lack of free trial for each provider means that the duration of the money-back guarantee becomes more relevant. I’d opt for NordVPN in this case, as you know you can duck out for a full 30-days after you opt-in. Whereas with IPVanish you have just 7 days to decide whether they are for you.

Privacy Comparison

Privacy is arguably the most important aspect of your VPN. Sensitive information (like your bank details) can be intercepted and stolen by hackers. You’ll want your VPN to adhere to the following three points, to ensure the highest level of privacy:

  1. Location (outwith the 14 eyes)
  2. Strict No Logs Policy
  3. Accept anonymous payments (like Bitcoin)

It is easy to see at first glance that NordVPN is the clear winner in this sub-category. As the locations of each company are as follows:

  • NordVPN – Panama
  • IPVanish – USA

Ideally, you don’t want to choose a VPN that is in the US due to privacy laws. Legally intelligence agencies can request logs and the provider must comply. This can put you at risk, especially if you are investing in a VPN for your privacy.

2.No Logs Policy

The keeping of logs is therefore not exactly valid, as IPVanish has to abide by the request for any data to be sent to intelligence agencies. In saying that, both companies state that they don’t keep logs, so we can’t really compare them on this feature.

3.Accepting Anonymous Payments

The last point, Bitcoin. It’s really important that your VPN of choice accepts Bitcoin to avoid the paper trail attached to purchasing with fiat currency.

  • NordVPN – Accepts Bitcoin
  • IPVanish – Doesn’t accept Bitcoin

International Server Coverage

Global Server Coverage is extremely important, especially to enjoy online movies and live streams. You’ll need to equip yourself with a VPN that has adequate coverage, especially when it comes to local servers. Each of the VPNs has a different number of servers in various international locations, so that is something to look out for.

  • NordVPN has 4,401 servers in 62 countries
  • IPVanish’s 1,000+ servers are located in 60+ countries.

Multi-Platform Support

It has never been more important to consider “Multi-Platform Support” than now. Many people enjoy consuming some content on their PC, while other content is best consumed via smartphone or tablet. So ensuring that your VPN offers support for all of your devices will offer you more freedom.

NordVPN supports the following platforms:

  • Android
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • iOS
  • Firefox browser extension
  • Chrome browser extension
  • Tomato router
  • DD-WRT-flashed router
  • NAS devices

IPVanish Supports most of the above but doesn’t’ currently offer any browser extensions. So NordVPN is a clear winner in the multi-platform support category.

Netflix Unblocking

Netflix content varies from country to country. So having the ability to unblock Netflix content in other countries is great. This gives you the freedom to watch new movies that are released anywhere in the world, without restriction.

Netflix’s access from NordVPN is limited to United States, Canada, France, and the Netherlands. So you couldn’t use them to unblock UK content. In saying that, the US Netflix is the largest library in the world, so that is normally what people want to access.

IPVanish doesn’t support accessing or streaming Netflix at all.

Customer Support

NordVPN offers support via live chat and email. They also offer a wealth of online tutorials in their “Help Center” so that you can resolve as many issues as you can by yourself. NordVPN offers around the clock 24/7 customer support support

IPVanish also offers support via email and live chat. Additionally, they offer telephone support, which is something that NordVPN doesn’t offer. IPVanish is open 24/7 and available to get in touch. They also offer online tutorials that will guide you through various aspects of their service.

Encryption Protocols

Another area of a VPN that you want to be vigilant about is their encryption methods. This is the software that they use to protect your data both at rest and in transit.

  • NordVPN uses what they call Next Generation Encryption – 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption. They also offer OpenVPN with TCP/UDP, IKEv2/IPsec, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, and SSTP.
  • IPVanish also uses 256-bit AES encryption as well as OpenVPN with TCP/UDP, IKEv2/IPsec, L2TP/IPSec – but not PPTP and SSTP.

Simultaneous Connections

Simultaneous Connections are the number of devices that you can connect to one subscription. VPNs normally limit the number of devices that you can install their software on with your subscription. A higher number of connections is good for businesses, families, and people with a large number of devices. Therefore comparing this metric is essential for this review.

Let’s see how each provider stacks up when it comes to the number of devices that you can use on each subscription.

  • IPVanish allows a nice 10 Simultaneous Connections, which is quite a lot more than most VPN companies out there.
  • NordVPN, on the other hand, offers just 6 Simultaneous Connections. This is not bad, but IPVAnish offers 4 more.

P2P/ BitTorrent Support

Torrenting (BitTorrent) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) is one of the major uses of a VPN. To use torrenting, you must secure your device, otherwise, you are opening yourself up for malware invasion and other security issues. BitTorrent is currently utilized by 150 million active users around the world, so you could say, it’s extremely popular.

Both IPVanish and NordVPN support torrenting. However, NordVPN only allows torrenting on a restricted amount of their servers. While IPVanish allows it on all of their servers.

The Bottom Line

NordVPN was a clear winner. They won 7 out of 10 of the categories compared. IPVanish stood out for torrenting, providing a phone number and offering 4 more simultaneous connections to their members. On all other fronts, NordVPN won, sometimes in a small way – for example, the price difference was minimal but NordVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. In other categories, for example, the sheer number of servers, NordVPN stood out as a clear winner.

NordVPN was the unequivocal overall winner in our NordVPN vs IPVanish comparison.
