LogMeIn Hamachi Pros:

LogMeIn Hamachi Cons:

LogMeIn Hamachi is not your typical VPN. As opposed to the other VPNs I have reviewed, such as NordVPN, LogMeIn Hamachi is a mesh network. Users are able to connect to the company’s servers, which are heavily encrypted, to connect to your networks remotely on all of the main operating systems, including Mac OS, Linux, and Windows. The service is highly secure and very easy-to-use, but it is not for everyone. Personally, I would advise this VPN if you’re a gamer or you run a business. I’ll give you my in-depth thoughts below.

Background information on LogMeIn Hamachi

LogMeIn Hamachi is a VPN that was written back in 2004 by Alex Pankratov, although it was purely known as Hamachi back then. It operates by establishing direct links between devices that are behind NAT firewalls, otherwise known as network address translation firewalls. It does this without any reconfiguration being needed.

LogMeIn purchased Hamachi from Pankratov in 2009. There is a production version available for macOS and Microsoft Windows devices, as well as a system VPN based client that is compatible with iOS and Android, and a beta version for Linux.

If you pay for one of the LogMeIn Hamachi, it will operate in the background of any computer that is idle. This is not something that you will get with the free package. Although this used to be the case, LogMeIn changed it so that only paid subscribers can benefit from this.

It is really important that I stress that LogMeIn Hamachi does not operate like other VPN providers that we know, be it ExpressVPN or CyberGhost. It does not have a worldwide server network that you can connect to. Nevertheless, it delivers basic VPN services for multiple and remote networks that tend to be associated with online gamers and businesses. Therefore, it is certainly not going to be the right choice for everyone.

The LogMeIn Hamachi network

LogMeIn Hamachi is not your standard VPN platform. It is a hosted, on-demand VPN service, which has the main function of enabling you to extend LAN-like networks to gamer friends, mobile workers, and distributed teams in a secure manner.

Another way to describe this is that you can use this VPN service to generate and manage virtual networks no matter where you are on the web for end-users as they are required, including multiplayer gaming sessions, podcasts with a number of contributors, and secure meetings.

With LogMeIn Hamachi, you have three different networks to select from, which are Gateway, Hub and Spoke, and Mesh. Let’s take a look at each one in more depth:

Hub and Spoke

With the Hub and Spoke option, you will be able to use one computer or several as hubs, while clients connect as spokes. The spokes are only able to connect to hubs, but they cannot connect to one and other. Such a network is utilised when a spoke (workstation) need to connect to hubs (servers) only, like in a library, where the catalog is the hub and the spokes are the workstations that are accessing it.

Next, with a Mesh network, all of the members will be connected with one and other. You can utilise this for setting up a virtual corporate LAN if you do not have a physical LAN. Gamers often utilise this, as network gamers need to broadcast their present status to everyone who is taking part in the game. Mesh is also the only type of network that can be created directly via the client interface on Hamachi.

Finally, we have gateway networks, which are pretty much a hybrid of the two network types I have explained above. They supply transparent access to your full network from a central Hamachi gateway. Members of the gateway network can see one computer acting as a gateway toward the full LAN, ensuring all resources of the network are accessible. Mobile workers tend to use this option.

Is LogMeIn Hamachi a secure VPN?

As far as security is concerned, there is one big red flag when it comes to LogMeIn Hamachi, and this is the fact that it keeps logs. I always prefer looking for a no-logs VPN, such as NordVPN. After all, you’re not really benefitting from privacy if a company is keeping logs on you, are you?

How fast is LogMeIn Hamachi?

The speed variations with this VPN are scalable, as the servers are pretty much provided via the users themselves. I have taken a look at a number of different speed tests, as well as combining my own experiences, and I think the speed is not the best! The download speed reduction is noticeable, and the ping time is too high.

Ease of use

Despite being full of different features, I found LogMeIn Hamachi very easy-to-use, which is certainly a big plus point for the VPN. It is professional, sleek, and polished, as well as being scalable, ensuring it is able to adapt to the needs of different companies.

How do you sign-up to LogMeIn Hamachi?

The process is really straightforward. Just follow these steps:

  • Head to the LogMeIn Hamachi website
  • Select a package
  • Make a payment
  • Download the file
  • Open the file
  • Begin the installation
  • Create a user and start using the program

Really easy, right?

How many connections do you get with LogMeIn Hamachi?

With the free plan, you will be able to benefit from five simultaneous connections. However, with the paid version, you can have as many as 256 simultaneous connections. This is what makes LogMeIn Hamachi a great choice for businesses in my opinion.

There are a number of app modes for staff members who wish to securely share files, including Gateway, Hub and Spoke, and Mesh.

What devices are compatible with LogMeIn Hamachi?

At the moment, there are builds of this VPN for the following operating systems:

  • Android (via Android system VPN)
  • iOS (via iOS system VPN)
  • Linux (beta)
  • macOS (Mac OS X 10.6 or newer, which run only on x86, not PowerPC)
  • Microsoft Windows (XP or later)

Is LogMeIn Hamachi a good VPN for gaming?

I would say that LogMeIn Hamachi is one of the best VPNs for gamers today, and there are a number of reasons why this is the case. The first is that you will be able to access blocked content online, which includes online gaming websites.

In addition to this, LogMeIn Hamachi will provide you with effective protection against DDoS attacks. As a lot of gamers will know, DDoS attacks are very common in the gaming market. However, LogMeIn Hamachi makes the most of AES-256-bit encryption to ensure that you are protected.

One negative to keep in mind, though, is that this VPN does not have a kill switch. This is something that I was disappointed to learn, as a kill switch is always one of the first features I search for when choosing a VPN. Without a kill switch, you are going to need to keep a close eye on your connection, as you’re not going to be protected if your connection drops out.

Does LogMeIn Hamachi unblock Netflix or other streaming platforms?

LogMeIn Hamachi is not the sort of VPN you should go for if you’re looking to unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer, or any other sort of streaming devices. However, I should point out that torrent downloads are permitted, which is good news when you consider that this service has been designed with players in mind.

Pricing for LogMeIn Hamachi

Now that you know everything that this VPN service has to offer, you will be wanting to know whether it is a value-for-money product.

There are four different plans available, which differ in terms of price and the number of connections you can have at the same time.

The first option is the free plan, which enables you to add up to five computers to your network.

The next option is the Standard plan, which enables you to add between six and 32 computers to your network. This costs $49 per year.

The next option is the Premium plan, which enables you to add between 33 and 256 computers to your network. This costs $199 per year.

The final option is the Multi-Network plan, which enables you to add up unlimited computers to your network. This costs $299 per year.

There are a number of different payment options for you to select from. This includes traditional solutions, like credit card, debit card, and PayPal. However, you also have the option of paying with Bitcoin if you would prefer.

Customer support from LogMeIn Hamachi

The customer support from LogMeIn Hamachi could do with some improvement. It is definitely not the worst I have seen, but I would certainly prefer if they decided to implement a live chat option.

If you want to contact the team, you will need to send an email to the company. They tend to answer quickly enough, with all of my queries answered within a 24-hour period.

Final words about LogMeIn Hamachi

As you can see, there are a lot of great features associated with LogMeIn Hamachi. If you are looking for the perfect VPN for your business, this is certainly an option worth considering. It delivers excellent security and performance, as well as a massive 256 simultaneous connections.
